Am I Normal Yet? by Holly Bourne | Book Review

After my friend tweeted about how much she loved Am I Normal Yet?  I knew that I'd have to give it a read. A powerful and emotive read following a girl called Evie on a 'quest' if you like, to become a 'normal' teenager. Made up recovery diary snippets and the trials of boys, friends and parties, Am I Normal Yet? brilliant first novel in a trilogy surrounding the same characters and their feminist group.

Mental health and feminism aren't topics that I've seen covered in young adult fiction, making Am I Normal Yet? a very current and refreshing read.

The book was emotive - I cried, laughed, and willed Evie to make the right choices. The writing really made me 'get inside' the mind of someone suffering from OCD, something that can't have been easy to achieve without determination and research.

I found it to be a very relatable book, which I understand that not everyone will, however I'm pretty sure that most people will feel they understand what Evie is going through simply because of how well it's written. Also I'm sure they will be characters in there that lots of people will be able to associate back to their school years.

As someone who loves to read young adult fiction to just 'get away' from life, it was so nice to read a book that's not your typical young adult novel. Yes there was boys and friendship and family difficulties, but I loved the addition of the mental health issues which so many teens are now finding to be a part of daily live, and also feminism - something I feel strongly about and needs to be approached in other ways than just the news.

Overall I loved Am I Normal Yet? and I can't wait for the next books to be released.

Have you read Am I Normal Yet?, or anything else by Holly Bourne? What did you think, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
