Combating January Blues

On the one hand January seems to have gone rather quickly, on the other hand it's January 83rd and so called blue Monday is upon us. Whether or not the notion of blue Monday is simply just a PR stunt or a pseudoscience, January certainly seems like the bleakest month of the year for me. It drags on, and whilst I'm excited about my upcoming graduation, I'm more than ready for spring to arrive. Because I find January so long and dull, I have a few things I like to do to try and beat the blues.

Get Outside

This may seem rather simple and a bit of cliche, but I find that fresh air really does make all the difference for me. Luckily for me, I have a fairly nice walk to and from work each day so that's an easy way for me to get a quick walk into my day. But also I think it's great to make a bit of extra time to go on a walk and explore new places - if you're in or near York, I love walking the city walls. It's a great way to blow away the cobwebs, and even better when we get a sunny winters day.

Treat Yourself

January is so often associated with cutting back and limiting yourself on things. But actually, with December being a month full of indulgence and treating yourself, it can be difficult to switch so quickly in a month that already seems so long.  I think it's important to remember to treat yourself in months that seem endless and so blue. It could be something you've had your eye on for a while as come up in the sales, or even just cooking your favourite meal and having an evening in painting your nails.

Talk to Someone

If you are struggling, there is absolutely no shame in reaching out and talking to people. Blue Monday maybe just a PR stunt, but there is no denying that a lot of people find January a difficult month to contend with. Talking to people really does make a difference. Ask someone how they are really doing, and not just as a passing comment without any desire for the answer. Admit that you're finding things difficult and I'm certain that people will be able to help you. Whether it be talking to a friend and arranging a coffee catch up, or whether you need to speak to professional; talking really does pave the way to beating the blues, whatever that may be for you.
